Proposed Recommendation

This recommendation centers on the production of television commercials though it may apply to other forms of content destined for TV release.The intent is to develop procedures and common practices which will serve during the transition from SD 4:3 to HD 16:9 and will establish the foundation for the new period of common practice.

ASSUMPTIONS:

  • Eventually, all television sets and broadcasts in the US will be High Definition, 16:9.
  • HD content can be shot on film or with digital video cameras.

WORKFLOW RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Shoot 24 fps film or 24p digital.
  • Frame for 16:9 and protect for 4:3.
  • Off line edit (US) 30i, NTSC, full frame or masked 16:9
  • All graphics, CGI, compositing at 1080, 24p
  • Universal Master: 1080p, 24fps, 16:9
  • Generate all deliverables from the Universal Master: HD, SD, Cinema, Internet, PDAs, Phones
